How Big Can Broadcast Areas for Radio Stations Be?

It’s amazing to see what you could get out of your radio at any time of day. The amazing point that comes with finding a radio station to listen to is that you might find a station that is well outside of the place that you live in.

Many different radio stations can offer large transmitters that help them to get their sounds carried out to more places. Some stations tend to be easier to hear than others. For instance, people have been able to report hearing stations like WLW-AM in Cincinnati from at least a thousand miles away from the city of Cincinnati.

However, the fact is that not all radio stations are built to be alike. Some stations might be stronger than many others. In particular, this comes from how many stations can have larger transmitters. Of course, there are also limits as to how powerful some stations may be.

How Much Radiated Power?

Radiated power is an important aspect to see with regards to how strong some radio stations can be. The thing about these stations is that they might offer hundreds of kilowatts of radiated power. This means that the power will be able to flex outward from an antenna into a larger space and will not be easily impacted by too many outside sources. In fact, you could be more likely to get a faraway station in your area if the conditions are clear.

Going back to WLW, the station would broadcast at 500kW of radiated power in the 1930s. This made it to where it could be heard in about half of the entire planet during the evening hours. That meant that people from parts of Europe or Africa could have easily listened to the programming that came out of Cincinnati at the time.

Power Limits Work Today

Today radio stations have to use lower power amounts than what was used in the past. For instance, radio stations in America can use 50kW of power and will have to lower their ratings at night. This is to keep monopolies in the industry from taking place.

Of course, the standards can vary by each country. For instance, in Mexico stations can work at up to 100kW at night. This makes it easier for stations that have transmitters registered across the border to offer larger coverage spaces.

Today you could still hear radio stations from quite a distance. For instance, if you are in the Waterloo area then you will clearly be able to hear radio stations that come from the Toronto area. However, some of the more powerful stations from Ottawa or Detroit may be accessible to your area depending on the weather conditions and where in the Waterloo area you might be. If you just test it out with your radio then you might find some interesting sounds that are worth experiencing.

You might be amazed at how powerful some radio stations are. Take a listen to your radio to see what you can get out of it and you might be surprised at what will come out based on where sounds originate from. You just might hear WLW on your radio if you’re lucky enough.
